Wise review

Wise international money transfer service - trusted by over 2 million customers.

International money transfers can be expensive. Banks and online providers may hide large fees in the bad exchange rates they give you, which costs significantly more than you’d think.

Wise charges a low, upfront fee. And they always use the real exchange rate with no markup, so you know there aren’t any hidden fees. They’re up to 8x cheaper than a bank.

Or continue reading to learn more about safety, how the service works, how long transfers take, and what the fees are - and why they’re so cheap.

How safe is Wise?

In short, every bit as safe as your bank.

Wise is regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority in the UK under the 2011 Electronic Money Regulations to provide financial services in the European Monetary Area. This is the same authority that regulates banks. They therefore follow the same strict security standards as traditional banks.

Wise’s main data center is located in Frankfurt, and is ISO certified. This means customers’ data never leaves Europe, and is subject to the tight European data protection and privacy laws. Wise also uses link encryption and two-factor authentication to keep your transactions secure. And of course, if you have any concerns you can always chat to customer support.

How does it work?

  1. Create an account: It’s free and only takes a few minutes.
  2. Set up a transfer: You’ll see the fees and estimated speed of your transfer.
  3. Tell them where it’s going: Add your recipient's bank details. Your recipient doesn’t need a Wise account. (You can send money to your own bank account too.)
  4. Pay into Wise: Pay in by card or make a local bank transfer. Depending on the country you're in, they have other local payment methods available too. No cash though.
  5. Your recipient gets paid: The money gets paid right into their bank account.

How long does a transfer take?

This depends on where you’re sending the money. The majority of transfers from EUR to GBP, USD or AUD go through in one working day or less.

What are the fees and how are they so cheap?

Wise charges one fee, which is based on where you’re sending the money, how much you’re sending, and how you fund the transfer. The fee is up to 5x cheaper than a bank, and you can see exactly how much your transfer would cost here.

Wise has bank accounts all over the world. When you send money with the service, your funds go into a bank account in your country, and their smart technology pays your recipient from an account in their country. Currencies never have to be changed, so you avoid all the costs that go into that.
